WordPress 3.1 “Reinhardt” Released! New Features & Security Fixes

February 23, 2011 By Regina Smola 21 Comments

WordPress 3.1 UpgradeWordPress 3.1 (Reinhardt) was made available to the public on February 23, 2011.

This version of WordPress is a major release that is more of a CMS than ever before with many enhancements and bug fixes.

There were over 180 people that helped develop WP 3.1, 2,000 commits to the codebase and over 820 tickets closed in Trac.

Here are some highlights of WP 3.1:

  • Internal Linking
  • New Admin Bar
  • Streamlined Writing Interface
  • Post Formats
  • Network Admin
  • List-type Admin Screens
  • Exporter/Importer Overhaul
  • Custom Content Type Improvements
  • Advanced Queries
  • Refreshed Blue Admin Color Scheme

According to Matt Mullenweg…

This release features a lightning fast redesigned linking workflow which makes it easy to link to your existing posts and pages, an admin bar so you’re never more than a click away from your most-used dashboard pages, a streamlined writing interface that hides many of the seldom-used panels by default to create a simpler and less intimidating writing experience for new bloggers (visit Screen Options in the top right to get old panels back), and a refreshed blue admin scheme available for selection under your personal options.

There’s a bucket of candy for developers as well, including our new Post Formats support which makes it easy for themes to create portable tumblelogs with different styling for different types of posts, new CMS capabilities like archive pages for custom content types, a new Network Admin, an overhaul of the import and export system, and the ability to perform advanced taxonomy and custom fields queries.

With the 3.1 release, WordPress is more of a CMS than ever before. The only limit to what you can build is your imagination.

We at WPSecurityLock will be upgrading to WordPress 3.1 soon and will post our review on the new enhancements and security elements.

      Hey Shirley!

Glad to hear it went smoothly for you. I really like the new features too. I’m building a new membership program with 3.1 and Wishlist Member and am having some fun with it.

I was looking at the list of report plugin conflicts and so far the only one I see that might case an issue with many of my clients sites is the Facebook Integration and Twiter–Tools plugins.

Since those are very popular plugins, I’m sure the developers will be in a hurry to update those.

      Hi Bob,

Glad to hear you didn’t have any issues with the new install. The install for me was as easy as before. Took only a few minutes. I’m still checking out all the new stuff. I like the extra options to show under “Screen Options” a lot.

We have upgrade about 15 sites so far to 3.1 and everything went really smooth. Really TOO SMOOTH! Kind of scary. All plugs which average about 10 plugins per site seem to be working fine as well. Looks like a lot of good beta testing took place before this late release.

If I find anything I will be happy to share.

Just wanted to comment …the new “Add Link” feature in WordPress 3.1 has to be my favorite…It makes inserting links so much faster.

I have a bit of a glitch with a fresh install of WordPress 3.1 and the flash uploader when adding images to a post. I have to switch to the “Browser Uploader” instead.

Anyone else having issues with uploading media?

      Hey Regina,

I’ve had issues with the flash uploader in 3.0 and 2.9 and like you had to switch to the Browser Uploader…I’ve had this glitch happen only once so far with 3.1

        Hey Shirley,

I think I remember that happening back then too.

Just installed the TinyMCE Advanced plugin to my fresh install of 3.1 and it activated fine. However, I am unable to slide the icons. It looks like it could be some type of flash or java conflict. I also checked the Kitchen Sink on a post and nothing shows at all. It’s amazing that 8 out of 5 say it works with 3.1

According to users on this post http://wordpress.org/support/topic/plugin-tinymce-advanced-wp-31-and-internal-link-feature?replies=8, the TinyMCE advanced doesn’t show the internal link icon.

Guess I’ll have to suffer with the standard WYSIWYG editor for now.

UH OH! Just found a major problem with 3.1 and judging from my online research and on WordPress.org forum…a lot of people are experiencing this. I got all 404 errors from Google Webmaster account and I noticed that WP is creating “extra” pages that do not exist. I checked my server error log…

“WordPress database error in SQL Syntax…

The problem is with permalinks. I’m not a techie and I’m sure you can explain better what all this means. But it seems to be a problem with 3.1…

            Hi Shirley,
Oh Yikes! I haven’t heard of a resolution yet, but hopefully they’ll get it fixed soon. I’m patiently waiting for 3.1.1 to be released.

The last thing we need is 404’s messing up our SEO.

Can you give me an example of an “extra” page that doesn’t exist? (Be sure you leave off your main url so people don’t click it and receive a 404.)

Let me know if you hear anything and I’ll do the same.

            ~ Regina

            Hey Regina,
Sorry for the delay in getting back to you…it turns out the extra pages were the work of a plug in …when I updated it the developer had removed many of the features I was using…because he decided they were no longer needed….but apparantly he has gotten a lot of feedback to put the features back…another update solved my issues.

The plug in btw was “Simple Tags”

Dashboard Menu dropdowns, screen options, and editor buttons not appearing, add this to the wp-config.php file has fixed this issue on several sites I’ve uploaded:

    define(‘CONCATENATE_SCRIPTS’, false );
