iThemes Security Review – Here’s What You Need to Know

March 28, 2014 By Anthony Xiques 4 Comments

Better WP Security Just Became iThemes Security

iThemes Security Plugin ReviewDid you know that 30,000+ websites get hacked every day? What do you think getting your site hacked would cost you, in terms of time, money and aggravation?

In the last 30 days, one special attack alone that hackers have been more partial to is the Denial-of-Service attack (DOS), which is sometimes referred to as a “brute force attack,” where they “ping” your site using angry bots from all over the world that can potentially overwhelm your server and cause everything to go down in a furious fiery wreck. Sites that were recently targeted and disabled include our friends at MeetUp, HootSuite and even AWeber.

It's easy enough to drastically reduce the risks of getting hacked.  Most website owners do not, even though it's pretty simple and either cheap or free!

Fortunately, the best WordPress security plugin is getting even better!

Today, our partner iThemes released a new versions of the security plugin that everybody knows and loves; formerly Better WP Security (BWPS), now iThemes Security or iThemes Security Pro. With a sweeping set of new features that follows the Obscure-Protect-Detect-Recover security model, this is by far the best solution available right now for malware prevention and securing your WordPress website.

What that means for you in layman's terms…

iThemes Security Review

The new iThemes Security plugin will help protect you from these nasty attacks – and you don’t event have to buy anything to be secure! Grab the free iThemes security plugin today – and watch its ninja-security features kick in, protecting your website, giving you peace of mind, and allowing you to focus on building your business instead of… recovering it from a backup.

You do back up your WordPress, right? (If not, we recommend iThemes Backup Buddy)

Here is what you need to know…

The biggest takeaway is that NOTHING has been taken out of Better WP Security for the new iThemes  Security plugin! In fact, they are going to ADD new features to the free plugin.

Here's more:

  1. Neither iThemes Security or the former Best WP Security will fix a website that has already been hacked. There is no good software or plugin that can do an adequate job of restoring a hacked website because they get hacked in so many ways.
  2. You must deactivate the Best WP Security plugin BEFORE you do the upgrade to transition properly to the new settings.
  3. Your hidden login page from the old version will not work. you must create a new one!
  4. If you need support, contact the iThemes Help Desk here

iThemes Security Complaints

There are lots of questions about the new iThemes Security plugin and, frankly, there are some mis-understandings.  There have been some negative iThemes Security reviews, but the iThemes engineers tell us that nearly 100% of the issues being reported by their user base involve users using old hidden login links.  You can understand how frustrating that is.

After upgrading to the new version, people were getting 404 errors for their hidden login pages. Many had bookmarked an old link, which is not longer valid. You must create a new hidden login link.

Their team is responding to users one-by-one as quickly as possible helping them resolve issues and mis-understandings quickly.

Also, one more note – I was in the webinar today with Chris Wiegman, lead developer for iThemes Security (formerly BWPS) – and this new launch has a lot of excitement and publicity growing with it. Their team is actively building out new Pro features – two-factor authentication, iThemes Sync integration (waaaaaay cool, btw), and country banning. Not to go all Geico on you, but…

$80 could save you 80 of your most precious files and up to 80 hours of pain and grief trying to restore them.

There, I did it.

One of the coolest things I’ve seen about this plugin upgrade is their option to use a safe version of jQuery in lieu of any other jQuery version you’re running in WordPress. However, there is of course a LOT more to it. Thanks for the review, Anthony and the team at WPSL!

Better read the reviews on http://wordpress.org/support/plugin/better-wp-security

Taking it over and renaming it just screwed a totally good plugin!

My advise, do not update Better WP security or install Ithemes security!

I love the new features added in iThemes Security. I have found that if you deactivate BWPS and then upgrade the plugin it works like a charm.

Hey Jaap! Yes we actually addressed some of those concerns at the end of a post here: http://wpsecuritylock.com/updating-better-wp-security-to-ithemes-security-pro/

I wouldn’t go as far as to say not to install the plugin, it’s a bit like throwing the baby out with the bathwater. In addition to Regina’s suggestion, the team at iThemes is on top of sorting out the bugs (http://wptavern.com/ithemes-working-fast-to-fix-users-upgrade-woes), and they are also on top of any bug reports – if people need help with any glitches that initially come with the upgrade process, they can report it at (http://ithemes.com/security/bugs/) for iThemes to address (which they will do pretty swiftly).
