How to Secure WordPress

WordPress is one of the most popular and powerful Content Management Systems (CMS) available. Every day, thousands of new people are using WordPress, not just for their blogs, but also for entire websites. Recently, WordPress was awarded the Overall Best Open Source CMS Award for 2009.

You can either get a free WordPress blog or self-host WordPress on your own domain name.

To purchase a domain name, we highly recommend GoDaddy*. To self-host WordPress, you will need a hosting account. We suggest using HostGator* or GoDaddy*.

Why you need to secure your WordPress blog or website

Although the developers of WordPress take security very seriously, self-hosting WordPress, as with any website, includes potential security risks. If you are self-hosting your own blog or website, or plan to, you are responsible for all maintenance and security.

Installing WordPress, adding a WP theme and some WP security plugins, and publishing content is not enough. Securing your self-hosted WordPress blog or website is the most important thing that you must do. Without taking the appropriate steps to help secure your WordPress site, your site is vulnerable to attacks and the results can be devastating.

A non-secure WordPress blog or website has the potential for:

  • Malicious software being installed on your visitor's computer.
  • An excessive amount of unwanted comments and ugly spam links.
  • Being labeled and blacklisted by search engines as a dangerous website. When a search engine visitor clicks on the link to your website, they are sent to a web page that says, “Warning – visiting this website may harm your computer!” (Note: These links are safe to click. They are from Google.)
  • Having parts or all of your site being completely wiped out.

How to secure WordPress

Although completely securing WordPress is not possible, we at WPSecurityLock can greatly help you increase the security of your self-hosted WordPress blog or website. You can reduce the vulnerabilities of your self-hosted WordPress site.

We offer WordPress Security Services to help you reduce the risk of malicious hacker attacks for both new and existing self-hosted WordPress blogs and websites, as well as security training webinars on how to secure WordPress.
